James Gray, réalisateur, scénariste et producteur américain, est diplômé de l'école de cinéma de l'Université de Californie du Sud. Née à New York, une famille d'immigrants juifs russes a grandi dans le Queens à New York et a initialement décidé de devenir peintre. À l'âge de 10 ans, après avoir vu "Apocalypse Now" de Francis Ford Coppola, Gray change d'ambition et décide de rejoindre le film. En 1991, Gray obtint son diplôme en cinéma et télévision de l'Université de Californie du Sud. Son travail d'étudiant "Cowboys and Angels" fut bien évalué.
